Besides the debut of the Harry Potter novels in 1997, that year The Simpsons passed The Flintstones as the longest running t.v. cartoon series, Princess Diana was killed in a tragic accident, and the expansion of Washington National Airport (later renamed for President Reagan), where this image was shot (on film, no less), was set to open in late July. Living in Washington, DC at the time, I was exploring my passion for architecture and designed spaces and thinking that perhaps this was a specialty in which I could excel. Just a few weeks before the airport’s official opening, I wandered the empty exterior spaces exploring the buildings’ geometry and the play of the intense summer light on their surfaces. Oh yea, 1997 was also pre-TSA days!
